What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is commonly known as a ‘nose job or nose surgery’. It’s a surgical procedure that is performed on the nose which corrects nose related irregularities such as bumps, size of the nose, accidents that damage the nose etc.
How does Rhinoplasty help?
You can alter the shape of your nose if you are not happy with how it looks for example, if it’s too big, wide or upturned.
Getting rid of bumps and other irregularities on the nose.
Rhinoplasty helps correct the nose if you have been in a sporting accident or anything that has caused damage to your nose.
Can help correct structural problems which might be the cause of breathing difficulties and blocked noses.
Are there any age restrictions for the surgery?
It’s advisable not to perform the surgery on younger patients who are still growing. Please check with your doctor or Rhinoplasty surgeon before making a decision.
How long does the surgery take?
Generally Rhinoplasty surgery takes up-to 2 hours; however it depends on what type of surgery you are going in for. Some revision procedures take up-to 4 hours.
Does it pain during or after the surgery?
Most surgeons prefer to conduct the surgery under general anaesthesia. The surgery itself is painless as you are not aware of the operation until you regain consciousness. You may feel a bit uncomfortable after the surgery because of the dressing in each of your nostrils for a couple of hours.
Is there anything I should do when I go home?
Keep your head elevated most of the time.
Refrain from taking hot baths.
Try not blow through your nose or even sneeze.
Keep something cold on your nose to ease the pain.
Will I feel uncomfortable after the surgery?
You will feel a bit of discomfort due to nasal congestion and minor bleeding. Ask your surgeon how you can deal with this.
When will the splints in the nose be taken?
Usually it takes about 1-2 weeks to remove the splints. Don’t forget to ask your surgeon prior to the surgery.
When can I go to work?
Patients are advised to take 1-2 weeks off from work. Although the surgery itself is minor, the incision should heal and the swelling should go down.
How long does it take for the swelling to go down?
It takes around 10-14 days for the swelling to go down and for your nose to take its intended shape. So don’t worry about how your nose looks during the recovery process.
Can I take part in strenuous activities?
It’s advisable to stay away from vigorous activities for at least a month. This will give the nose ample time to heal and return to normal.
What is the difference between an open and closed Rhinoplasty Surgery?
The main difference between these two type of Rhinoplasty surgeries is the access point through which the surgery is performed. During Open Rhinoplasty surgery (External Rhinoplasty) the surgical procedure is done on the underside of the nose. This enables the surgeon to visibly see what he or she is doing throughout the surgery. During the Closed Rhinoplasty (Endonasal Rhinoplasty) surgery the surgical procedure is done inside the nostrils.
Is Open Rhinoplasty better than Closed Rhinoplasty?
There are no defining consequences that make one type of Rhinoplasty better than the other. Both have their pros and cons. It’s usually up-to the surgeon to decide which is best for the patient depending on what needs to be done.
